Jim Davis was born on 28 July 1945 in the small town of Marion, Indiana USA. His parents were farmers and brought up their two boys, Jim and Davey (who would later be the model for Jon’s brother Doc Boy) surrounded by cattle and at least twenty cats.
When Jim Davis was very young, he suffered from asthma (a respiratory problem caused mainly by allergies) which meant he couldn’t play outside and spent his days in the house. He started drawing when his mother, seeing how bored he was, gave him a pencil. He drew whatever was there around him. At first, you couldn’t really tell what it was supposed to be. Jim would give his drawings a title. He gradually improved and added text, often humorous, and he has never stopped. He drew on paper, on tables, on walls, everywhere!
