Jim Davis and Garfield

After an initial (fruitless) attempt with his Gnorm Gnat series, Jim Davis created Garfield. In June 1978 his first strips appeared in US newspapers (cf. The Comics page). They were an immediate hit and fans started asking for Garfield merchandise! Jim could therefore develop Garfield’s image far beyond the three frame format. An animated TV series followed, as did thousands of books, posters, models, soft toys and several feature films…

As the demand for Garfield grew, Jim found he needed help. In 1981, he established Paws Inc., a creative and business house to manage Garfield’s growing empire. About 50 or so employees look after the day-to-day affaris relating to Garfield business. Jim Davis built the Paws headquarters near Muncie, Indiana, according to ecological and environmental principles. This is his workplace, where he writes the Garfield comic strips and  oversees nearly every angle of the Garfield program. The famous roguish feline is known and loved in over 11 countries worldwide and his success shows no sign of abating…
